Yarn Along

Joining in with Ginny at Small Things yarn along this week.

I cast on a new project this week.  I decided to go ahead and make Scarlett a dress from a pattern I shared in a previous yarn along.  At the time I’d purchased acrylic yarn suggested in the pattern and as much as I loved the colour, I didn’t like the feel of the acrylic yarn.  I purchased some yarn this week that was 100% wool and only $3 a ball.  It’s a very similar colour to what I was going to use.  I was also able to return the acrylic yarn that I had originally purchased.  The yarn appears quite blue in my photo, but I would describe it as more like teal (not great light here today for photos).

I won’t go on about my book this week.  Still on The Lacuna.  I don’t think I have ever taken so long to read a book before!

Can’t wait to see what everyone has been knitting this week.  Jacinta x

Oliver + S Backpack

I have made my first project from the New Oliver + S, Little Things to Sew book.  I made the backpack for my horse crazy girl, Scarlett.  She has been desperate for a new bag and I didn’t want to buy another made in China, fall-apart-the-next-day bag.  It will serve as her ballet bag and perhaps for sleepovers too.

Front of backpack

I found the pattern easy to follow and there was no swearing or throwing of sewing items (oh I have been quite the diva in my sewing past!).  Everything lined up and it sewed up beautifully.  Of course, I couldn’t get a heavy duty zip, so had to buy a dress zip.  I’m just hoping the zip will last.  I used webbing for the straps and covered them in the flower material and I double sewed around the main body of the bag and lining, as our dear Scarlett lives life with exuberance and thus, so do her belongings.

Back of backpack

I have put the bag on her bed.  We will see if she can find it amongst all the special things residing on her bed!

I have added a ribbon to the zipper for ease of opening

A peek inside the bag. The button at the back closes a little pocket to stow treasures

I can’t wait to sew some more goodies from the book, just have to get rid of a sewing backlog.  The material for the backpack was purchased at Lincraft.  Jacinta x

A Birthday Celebration

Today is my birthday.  Yet another trip around the sun.   Although no sunshine to be seen today.  We have had some really cold weather here the last couple of days, with it snowing just up the road yesterday.  Today was foggy and drizzling.  Although I must admit living in the hills adds a mystical and most magical element to this wintery weather.

My mum came to spend time with us for my birthday and and gave me a leave pass this afternoon (I have been home all week with Scarlett being unwell).  I went to my favourite cafe in Sassafras called Ripe and enjoyed a quiet lunch and read my kindle book.  Bliss!  I then wandered to the local wool/yarn shop and proceeded to buy some lovely alpaca wool (pictures to come).  I think it will become a scarf and hat, as I feel we are in for some more arctic weather before winter is out.

Mum and Scarlett baked me a chocolate cake and the girls decorated it for me.  The concentration that went into that cake was amazing.

Happy birthday was sung and the kids helped blow the candles out.  I was sure Jairah would pass out from his candle blowing efforts.

I have received some lovely gifts from lovely friends and family.   I ordered myself some beautiful fabric, but that will have to be another post!

This journal has the most beautiful pages both outside and inside

A gift from a dear friend

I am now parked in front of the open fire with Cardamon snuggled up next to me.  Ah, life is good.  Jacinta x

Yarn Along – And A Giveaway! – NOW CLOSED

Joining in with Ginny at Small Things yarn along this week.

I have finally finished the pebble vest.  I am happy with how it has turned out.  Now for the fun part, I am giving away the vest!

I would size the vest between 6-12months, however, all babies are different sizes, so it is only an estimate.  It measures 9.5″ or 23.5 cm across and 11″ or 28cm from back of neck to hemline.  The buttons down the side are made of coconut and the heart buttons on the shoulder are wooden.  It is a wool/soya blend yarn.  The colour in the second photo is the most correct.  It’s mocha in colour.  It is really dark here today, so not great for photos (in fact it has been snowing just up the road from us).  It would suit either a boy or a girl.  I will leave comments open until Friday 13th (I’m sure that means good luck!).  Entry is open to international lovelies too.   Please mention in the comment section if you want to be entered into the draw.

This is close to the true colour

Now to start thinking about my next project.  As for what I am reading, I am still plugging away at The Lacuna.  I don’t get a lot of reading time at the moment so only reading a few pages before going to bed.  At this rate, I will be reading it for the rest of the year!   Looking forward to seeing what everyone else is up to.  Jacinta x

A Jumper Renewed

Tenneille had a favourite owl jumper that we recently gave to a little girl who had been left behind at a playground.  After everyone waited for 2 hours to see if anyone would return to get the girl the police had to be called as it was getting late.

Tenneille was quite distressed that we had given the girl her favourite jumper, so I promised I would make her her very own mama made owl jumper and I explained to her that the little girl was cold and needed her jumper more than she did at the time.  Suffice to say, Tenneille loves her new owl jumper and tells me that is it better than the one she’d had.

It is my own pattern and is made from scraps of material.  I attached the material to double sided ‘heat-n-bond’ and ironed it onto the jumper.  I did running stitch around the edges and sewed two wooden buttons on for the eyes.  The jumper was purchased from an op-shop, as it seems plain jumpers are hard to come by when trying to shop in a hurry.  (Have I mentioned I love op shops?  Well I do).

As for the little girl, apparently she was picked up from the police station the same evening.  That is all I know.  I must admit I didn’t sleep well for many days afterwards.  It was quite distressing for all involved and I only hope the little girl has recovered from her ordeal.

Happy Mother’s Day

What a lovely day I have had with my sweet little family.  I got lots of cuddles followed by breakfast in bed.

I got handmade cards and the girls wrapped the presents themselves.  I love how proud they were of their work.

We had plans to go and visit a local garden, but the day turned out to be wet and quite foggy.  We spent a busy day at home instead.  My heart is full to the point it could burst with the love I have for this family of mine.  I am blessed.  I hope you had a beautiful day too.  Jacinta x
